App Development

I started developing apps in 2010, using DVD menu architectures to offer questions for players to answer. It sounds silly, but we were able to put culturally relevant materials in every DVD player in our community.

When Apple discontinued DVD Studio Pro I migrated towards Macromedia director. Using sprites and behaviors I was able to add Indigenous language content to challenge/response routines. this format also allowed me to move away from the physical medium of a desk, and to deliver material across platform and browser.

More recently Apple’s and Google’s coding platforms have offered a more robust mechanism for putting language learning applications directly into learners hands. today these apps fall into three categories:

  • Translation games— these apps are helpful for drawing attention to gaps in learner’s understanding of grammar…
  • Software keyboards— these are system level keyboards that allow users to type, text, tweet and post in their Indigenous language…
  • Kids games— these focus on building vocabulary through tactile learning activities…
